Our Story

Honoring Our Past. Building Our Future.

Northcoast Marine Solutions has a rich history rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and a passion for the marine industry.

Where It All Began

After pursuing careers in unrelated fields, brothers Russ and Roger Griffin decided to build a business that would allow them to work near the water. Roger, an avid boater, was already familiar with marine canvas, and together the brothers attended Custom Marine Canvas Training Workshops in Ohio.

Inspired by their experience, they opened a modest 600-square-foot canvas shop and quickly established a reputation for their innovative approach to marine canvas design. Recognizing opportunities to improve the fit, function, and appearance of factory-produced canvas, they became known for creating thoughtful, custom solutions for their customers.

Just two years later, the brothers purchased an established marine canvas training school, combining it with their growing fabrication operation to form Northcoast Marine Specialties LLC.

What began as a small shop eventually expanded into a 12,000-square-foot facility offering custom marine canvas and upholstery, yacht storage, professional training, and an extensive selection of marine fabrication tools and supplies.

A Legacy of Education

One of Northcoast's most distinctive contributions to the marine industry is its training school.

The school's origins date back more than 30 years to an initiative developed in collaboration with the Marine Fabricators Association. Originally, six training districts were established across the United States to promote professional marine canvas education.

Of those original programs, Northcoast Canvas Training is the only one still operating today.

Through hands-on instruction, practical experience, and ongoing support, the school has helped generations of students develop the skills and confidence to enter the marine canvas industry, improve their craftsmanship, and establish businesses of their own.

A New Chapter

In September 2026, Northcoast entered a new chapter when Josh and Sarah Wentz acquired the business, establishing Northcoast Marine Solutions LLC.

Together with family members Matthew and Mackenzie, they are building upon the foundation Russ and Roger established, bringing fresh perspectives while preserving the craftsmanship, knowledge, and relationships that have defined Northcoast for decades.

As a family-owned and operated business, Northcoast remains committed to the values that built its reputation: quality workmanship, innovation, dependable service, and a dedication to supporting both customers and fellow marine professionals.

Today, Northcoast Marine Solutions continues to provide custom marine canvas and upholstery services throughout the Lake Erie Islands region, supply specialty materials and tools to fabricators and boat owners nationwide, and offer hands-on education through Northcoast Canvas Training.

Looking Ahead

As we look toward the future, our focus remains on strengthening the foundation that made Northcoast what it is today.

We are committed to supporting our customers, investing in our team, expanding our product offerings, and continuing to develop educational opportunities for the next generation of marine fabricators.

Above all, we believe the knowledge and craftsmanship behind this industry are worth preserving.
